Abhay Deol is the latest actor to speak up about what he calls the ‘covert and overt ways people in the industry lobby against you’. The case in point is the film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Abhay took to Instagram to write about how award functions demoted him and Farhan from main leads to ‘supporting actors’ and how, while Farhan was okay with it, Abhay boycotted the awards.
The unmissable hashtag after his caption says ‘Familyfare Awards’, a not-so-subtle dig at Filmfare Awards, which indeed nominated Abhay and Farhan both for the ‘best Supporting Actor’ award, and Hrithik and Katrina in the ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ categories respectively.
“‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, released in 2011. Need to chant this title to myself everyday nowadays! Also a great watch when anxious or stressed. I would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads, and nominated us as “supporting actors”. Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as “actors in a leading role”. So by the industry’s own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes. There are many covert and overt ways in which people in the industry lobby against you. In this case it was shamelessly overt. I of course boycotted the awards but Farhan was ok with it. #familyfareawards,” wrote Abhay on Instagram.
The fairness (or lack of it) of Bollywood award shows have time and again made it to the news. The recent context of course is the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, and how his last film Chhichhore, a film on suicide, living life, and not worrying about results, did not have a great run at the awards season. Many fans of Sushant took to social media to call out the industry’s nepotism and favouritism for someone like an Ananya Panday, who was awarded the Best Female Debut of the Year for her role in Student Of The Year 2.
Chhichhore, meanwhile, was nominated in five categories including Best Film, but did not receive a single award at the Filmfare Awards 2020.
In fact, Ananya Panday’s award had raked up a storm on Twitter even at the time she was awarded the Best Female Debut trophy, but like all things on social media, the outrage didn’t last long.
In the past, several actors have pointed out how unfair Bollywood awards were, and how all of them ran on, what Abhay Deol terms ‘lobby’. An old video of Salman Khan had gone viral earlier this year, where the actor said he would ‘not go up and pick up a Filmfare or any stupid award’.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starred Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin in the lead roles. The film, directed by Zoya Akhtar, was on based on the ephemerality of life and how we needed to live every moment – because, well, zindagi na milegi dobara.
